Mekakushi Code

Tsubomi Kido (木戸 つぼみ Kido Tsubomi) / Kido (キド) is the first member of the Mekakushi Dan and currently its leader. She is the biological younger half-sister of Rin Kido.

She is the foster sister of Seto, Kano, and Ayano Tateyama.[11]

Appearance

Kido has black eyes and long green hair that has somewhat messy bangs. She is frequently mistaken for a boy because of her androgynous appearance. She is also noted to have a very pretty face by Momo [12]and Takane.[13] Kido usually wears a red track jacket with a zipped up collar underneath a dark, purple-gray hoodie that has a headphone design on on its hood and an iPod button design on the front, along with volume bars on the pocket. Her pants are green with white insides, and the left pant leg is rolled up to signify she's in a gang. Her shoes are mint green converse high tops.[14]  In Mekakucity Actors, she ties her hair up in a high ponytail underneath her hood.[15]
When she was younger, Kido had short hair that ended above her shoulders. When she lived with her biological family, she wore a white blouse with a red ribbon around its collar, a frilly black skirt, thigh highs, and dress shoes. She wears this same outfit in Episode 9 of Mekakucity Actors.[16] Sometimes in the orphanage, she wore a black cap, a black hoodie, white shirt, black shorts and purple sneakers.[7]
In Summertime Record, she has her hair and hood down and wears what seems to be the same red jersey jacket underneath a green hoodie that opens down to her waist and has sleeves pulled up to her forearms. Her pants are light gray.
In the short film Kagerou Daze -in a day's-, Kido's hair is once again in a ponytail and has a cowlick at the top of her head. She wears a light purple-gray pullover hoodie with a white drawstring in its hood, white trim and designs around the collar, pockets with a slightly darker trim, sleeves that end at the elbows, and a split ribbed hem. Underneath her jacket, she wears a red undershirt that has what appears to be uncuffed red sleeves that end just below her elbows. Her pants are dark gray with a short splits at the bottom of their inner seams, and she wears red converse high tops.
As an adult, Kido once again has short hair and wears a white blouse, a purple cardigan, black pants, and black ballerina flats.[7]

Personality

The current leader of the Mekakushi Dan, Kido is a mature individual whose main priority is the Dan and its members' safety and comfort.[17] However, she often makes a bad first impression with strangers due to her "glare-like gaze."[18][19]
Kido is often seen listening to music through her earphones and can be quiet at times, both habits she kept from childhood.[20] Kido can get short-tempered and violent, especially around Kano, and doesn't hesitate to express her annoyance with the other members, even Marry.
Despite her outwardly cold and intimidating demeanor, Kido is a very caring individual and works hard to be a good leader to the Mekakushi Dan. As such, Kido is liked and well-respected by most if not all members of the Mekakushi Dan. For example, after meeting her for the second time, Shintaro thinks that she is likely the most reasonable out of the Mekakushi Dan and also motherly[21], and Kano describes Kido as “rough around the edges” but always kind. [22] She likes cute things[23][24] and is scared of roller coasters,[25] horror,[26] and even shed snake skin.[21] Kido tries to keep up the appearance of a reliable leader and denies her fears and more "soft" interests when they're brought up.[26]
In contrast to her current self, Kido once had a timid personality. The illegitimate child of the head of the Kido family, she was adopted into her father's home after her mother died and, feeling that she did not belong, wanted to disappear. She was also both impressed and intimidated by her older half-sister, Rin.[27] After her father and sister's deaths, her personality hardened, and she became more direct, as shown when she calls Kano a "freak" to his face and tells Seto to shut up. In the Tateyama household, Kido acted aloof but would play with her siblings from time to time.[24]
Her childhood insecurities became tangible when her eye ability, which she had trouble controlling at first, caused her to frequently "disappear" from others' perspectives. The would cause her to cry in fear about "disappearing forever"[28]. Kido also generally had trouble speaking after a boy around her age made fun of her inability to communicate.[29] She still harbors some insecurity over her ability and dislikes harsh reactions to it and being called a "ghost".[28]
Her personality grew into the one it is now after she, following Ayano's suicide, took on the role the Mekakushi Dan's new leader and learned how to control Concealing Eyes. Kido's current personality and how she treats the Mekakushi Dan also seems to be heavily affected by Rin, who was both stern and protective over Tsubomi. Like her sister would to her, Kido teases Dan members when she sees the opportunity arise and is protective over them to the point of risking her own life when there's danger.[27]

Eye Ability

Concealing Eyes (目を隠す Me o Kakusu): Kido's eye ability allows her to divert perception away from certain people and/or objects within 2 meters of themselves, making them difficult to identify and practically invisible. Conversation between hidden people also won't be heard by outsiders despite their volume. Physical contact, however, breaks the effect, so it isn't useful in very crowded places. Along with this vulnerability, if a person outside the 2-meter bubble is familiar with someone being concealed, her power will not be as strong, as said regarding Shintaro and his connection to Momo and seen with the Snake of Clearing Eyes.
Her strength and control over her ability is enough so that she can mask Momo's Drawing Eyes and even allow Drawing Eyes to work within her ability's radius. When doing this, she was also shown to be able to extend her ability's radius to cover a whole building .
Her ability also allows her to conceal her own memories from herself. Azami taught her how to do this after she gained her snake in the Kagerou Daze to, in hopes of her having a somewhat better childhood, have her forget certain details of her death, specifically her father's murder attempt on Rin and her, Tsubomi, killing him.[27]

Trivia

  • Like her foster siblings Seto and Kano, she is referred to by her last name rather than her first name.
    • Kano was the one to appoint her as the leader of the Mekakushi Dan after Ayano's suicide. To help her "feel" more like a leader, he decided that they should start calling each other by their last names since they sound like code names and that she'd be called "Commander" (団長, danchou), which both embarrassed and pleased her. [30]
  • She refers to herself in first person as "ore" (俺), a very masculine pronoun, rather than "watashi" (私), which is seen as more feminine in informal settings. Along with this quirk, she refers to people in second person as "omae" (お前), which can be considered masculine and rude depending on context. As a child, she used "watashi".
  • Kido used to get extremely irritated at Seto and Kano whenever they used keigo[31] (Japanese honorifics, typically used for politeness/respect) around her. This is from when she lived with her half-sister, Rin, who told her there was no need to be so polite when speaking to her. She made a promise to herself that she would do the same if she ever had any younger siblings. However, she doesn't like using keigo in general as well, likely also due to her past in general.[32]
    • Kano, in the Manga Route 2, notes he would have used keigo for Kido if she hadn't asked him not to.[33]
    • When they were younger, Seto tried to use it multiple times despite her request and threats, which upset them both and put a strain on their friendship.[34] Seto would eventually stop using keigo once he understood it upset her.
  • Her hoodie was a gift from Ayaka so she can hide her eyes when her powers activated.[35]
  • Her favorite bands and artists are Oasis, RADIOHEAD, and Shugo Tokumaru.[1]
  • Although she does not like flashy clothing, Kano has mentioned that she owns a frilly skirt somewhere.[36]
  • Her outfit was based on the lyrics of her song, Mekakushi Code, by her character designer Sidu.[37]
