Kagerou Daze V -the deceiving- (カゲロウデイズV -the deceiving-) is the fifth light novel volume.

The novel is narrated by Shuuya Kano and is about how, on August 16th in the Novel Route, he tells Ene his backstory, including how he met his foster siblings, Ayano's past plan to stop the Snake of Clearing Eyes, and his own involvement with Clearing Eyes afterwards.

Summary[]

Yobanashi Deceive 0[]

(夜咄ディセイブ0 Yobanashi Diseibu 0)

Kano tells a suspicious Ene that he'll take her to her original body. He narrates that he doesn't blame her for not trusting him, since he has Deceiving Eyes and has lied so much that he doesn't know himself either. To get her trust, he says that he will tell her stories from his past and swears that he will not bore her.

One Day, on a Roof[]

(或る日の屋上にて Aruhi no Okujō Nite)

Kano, disguised as Ayano with Deceiving Eyes, listens to Takane complain about her classmate Haruka on their school's rooftop during lunchtime. He reflects on what he knows about Takane and how she has a crush on Haruka. Takane asks "Ayano" if there's anyone that she likes, and Kano replies that there's no one in particular. This surprises Takane, who Kano supposes thought Ayano would say Shintaro, Ayano's classmate. He thinks about how he has wanted to punch Shintaro since first meeting him and would prefer to not see him in general. Shintaro and Haruka then arrive at the rooftop from the cafeteria.

Yobanashi Deceive 1[]

(夜咄ディセイブ1 Yobanashi Diseibu 1)

A child, Kano sits at a park with a bruise on his cheek from his mother, who beats him whenever he believes he's made a mistake. When the alarm calls for children to go home, Kano plans to stay there when he sees a young girl on the ground. He twists his ankle and falls when he reaches the girl, shown to be Ayano in an illustration, who is fine. Hoping that she would just go away, Kano tells Ayano that he was practicing a superhero skill, and the girl says she was doing the same. They agree to meet again before Kano leaves.
Kano comes home to see a robber inside and his mother tied up. Kano lunges at the man, who throws him and then goes for a knife. Kano tries to stand up to him, but his mother instead tackles the man and is stabbed. Kano then attacks and is also stabbed. Kano then enters the Kagerou Daze, which appears to him as a city at night, which he associates as the "adult world" that takes his mother away. While walking in a daze, he suddenly hears the Snake of Deceiving Eyes speak into his ear.
The snake points out the "lies" in the night city around them and how adults use them to protect themselves. Kano wants to leave and wonders why his mother keeps going back to this world for adults. The snake tells him that, to learn, he needs to rid of his own heart, since here he only needs lies. Kano feels himself lose consciousness, and the snake tells him to "deceive them all".

Yobanashi Deceive 2[]

(夜咄ディセイブ2 Yobanashi Diseibu 2)

Two months later, Kano now lives with an unfamiliar in-law of his mother and spends his days lying on the floor. Feeling strange at the thought of needing to grow up, Kano gets up to find medicine and passes the kitchen, where he sees a knife identical to the one that killed him and his mother. Holding the knife and missing her, he vividly recalls his mother's characteristics. His "aunt" (as he refers her) startles him by screaming and then running away. Kano sees his mother in the blade's reflection and sees, in the bathroom, that he turned into his mother.
Realizing that his aunt is probably calling the police, Kano closes the door. He thinks back and realizes that he probably changed when recalling his mother earlier. Kano tries to turn into someone else and sees that he now looks like Ayano. Now having fun, Kano enjoys himself before hearing the front door open with his aunt and the police. To change back, Kano thinks about himself, but it doesn't work because he doesn't know himself well enough.
When the police arrives, Kano trips trying to hide, causing them to arrive. When his aunt refers to him by name, Kano checks the mirror and sees himself. He realizes that pain feels nostalgic to him and is the only "identity" he knows to turn back to himself, and he accepts his new ability to deceive people while laughing.

Yobanashi Deceive 3[]

(夜咄ディセイブ3 Yobanashi Diseibu 3)

Kano's aunt determines that she is being haunted by his mother and takes him to an orphanage. When they arrive, his aunt leaves him outside while she talks with the staff, and Kano eventually complains of the cold. A scarf suddenly appears floating in front of him, and he yells before seeing a person, shown to be Kido in an illustration, holding it. Kano rejects the scarf because it seems expensive, so Kido puts it in on Kano and says that she has been watching him for a long time, so she knows how cold he is. Kano thanks her and asks what she meant by watching him. He jokingly calls her a ghost, causing her to cry and then disappear.
Kano rubs his eyes and finds Kido in front of him again but with her feet missing, and Kano wonders if she's really a ghost before figuring that she may be like him, who visited death. Kido asks if he really thinks that she is ghost-like, and Kano denies it and says that they're similar and thus friends. Kano shows her his own ability by turning into Ayano. Since experimenting with his ability, he has discovered that he can only turn into people whom he's had direct contact with before. Kido finds his power cool and asks him to change again, so he turns into his mother.
Kido shakes Kano's hand to confirm their friendship. Kido's introduction is interrupted by his aunt screaming. He remembers he forgot to turn back and asks Kido her to punch him, and she angrily punches Kano for the first time of many.

Yobanashi Deceive 4[]

(夜咄ディセイブ4 Yobanashi Diseibu 4)

Kano meets with Kido and Seto, their room's first occupant, on his bed in their shared room, labeled 107, to discuss how to change their nickname as "monsters" from everyone at the orphanage. Throughout their discussion, Kido gets angry with Seto for using keigo when speaking with them.
Kano recalls how Kido, still angry over their first meeting, gave Kano the silent treatment for weeks, so he befriended Seto, who has been in the orphanage since birth and was friendless besides a now deceased dog named Hanako. Seto has his own ability, Stealing Eyes, and accidentally reads Kano's thoughts with them. Kido gets annoyed again and tensions rise, leading to her beginning to disappear with Concealing Eyes. To placate the two, Kano uses Deceiving Eyes to turn into a cat. Hearing their laughter, a worker then walks in on Kano dancing as a cat and faints.
The next day, the kids meet again, and Kano eventually gets fed up with Kido's attitude towards Seto. The two have a fight which ends with Kido declaring that she hates Kano and now plans to leave by accepting an adoption offer. The boys learn later that they were also to be adopted by the same family, though Kido doesn't talk to them until their new mother, Ayaka Tateyama, arrives. Ayaka takes them to her home and tells them to wait in their new room for their new older sister, which surprises them.
Kano finds out that his new older sister is Ayano, and the two immediately recognize each other. Ayano asks them call her "Big Sis" ("Onee-chan"). Kido and Seto do, but Kano calls her just "Sis" ("Nee-chan"). Kano narrates that, in hindsight, he's since felt towards his older sister how he felt towards his mother.

One Day, on the Street[]

(或る日の路上にて Aruhi no Rojō Nite)

Kano, disguised as Ayano with Deceiving Eyes, walks home while despairing over Ayano's death, which he just witnessed after pretending to be her corpse and had photos taken of him. He thinks about how he has no choice but to obey the Snake of Clearing Eyes or else it will kill Kido and Seto. Kano slips and falls, causing great pain, and he thinks that it would be for the best for his ability to cancel now.
He then encounters Shintaro, who, believing him to be Ayano, asks what's wrong before guessing that Ayano didn't do well in summer school. Kano realizes that his ability didn't cancel despite the fall and becomes angered. He begins to leave and, when Shintaro tries to stop him, tells Shintaro that everything is his fault for not noticing.

Yobanashi Deceive 5[]

(夜咄ディセイブ5 Yobanashi Diseibu 5)

In the next few years, Kano lived what could be called a happy life. As kids, they pretended to be part of a secret organization, the Mekakushi Dan. Kano, Kido, and Seto attended then dropped out of school. Seto ran away and met Marry Kozakura in her home and, since then, has had more control over Stealing Eyes. Kido has also calmed down and has gotten better control over her ability. However, one month ago, Ayaka passed away, devastating them.
Some time later, Ayano meets with Kano to discuss Ayaka, who had been studying the "Monster" and was aware of the kids' eye abilities. Now, the Snake of Clearing Eyes has possessed Ayano's father, Kenjirou, who wishes to meet with Ayaka again by creating a new "monster" in this world. However, doing so will kill Kano, Kido, and Seto, since it involves taking their snakes that act as replacements for their lives, and also Takane and Haruka, whom the Snake of Clearing Eyes plan to kill on August 15th so that they can acquire snakes.
The Snake of Clearing Eyes already acquired a massive amount of money and, thus, power over organizations such as schools, hospitals, and even the police. Ayano then tells Kano that she plans to negotiate with the Snake of Clearing Eyes, which Kano says is a death wish.
The following August 15th, Kano finds Ayano on her school's rooftop with Kenjirou possessed by the Snake of Clearing Eyes. Despite his pleas, Ayano steps off the roof and is swallowed into the Kagerou Daze. The Snake of Clearing Eyes tells Kano that though its plan failed, it can just start over instead. It then threatens Kano with Kido and Seto's lives to follow its orders, starting with pretending to be Ayano's corpse for the police report.

Today, on the Street[]

(今日という日の路上にて Kyō to Iu Hi no Rojō Nite)

Back at the present day, Kano wonders if Ene reunited with her body. He muses about himself and regrets acting cruelly to "those kids" the day before, though he didn't have much of a choice.
Seto arrives, having been looking for Kano. Kano gets frustrated and lashes out. Seto hugs him and apologizes for letting Kano carry his burdens by himself and asks him to share them, since they're brothers.
Kano decides to tell Seto his story with the rest of the Mekakushi Dan at the hideout, so the two begin walking. They encounter Takane, whom Kano identifies as Ene, to Seto's shock. Kano asks her to not share what he told her, and she teases him for pretending to be Ayano. Kano jabs back that Takane seemed to be having fun as Ene, and Takane, embarrassed, mutters that Shintaro is going to hate her. Kano offers that they talk with everyone together, and she agrees. As the three walk back in conversation, Kano thinks to Ayano to wait for them.

Afterword: Pulling the Wool Away from Your Eyes[]

(~あとがき『目から鱗の落ちる話』~)

Jin greets the reader and comments about Kano, who is "crankier" compared to other characters and thus more difficult to write and hopefully more lovable. He jokes that the title was a tie between "The Deceiving" and "My Wacky Sister-Swapping Cross-Dressing Fantasy".
Since it's already volume five, he says that he feels sort of sad knowing that his first writing gig's end will come eventually. He promises to devote everything he has to write until the end and hopes that the readers, who inspire him with their fanworks, will stay to see how the characters develop. He notes that there hasn't been a novel that covers the Mekakushi Dan's everyday lives, and the ten of them haven't been in one scene together yet. He says that he would like to write a novel about this in the future, if he has the chance.
Alongside writing the novel, Jin's been participating in live shows, producing intro songs for video games, and writing the scripts and intro song for the upcoming anime, Mekakucity Actors. He says he's really excited about the anime and thanks everyone for their support again.

Trivia[]

  • In the original Japanese prints of the novel, in chapter "Yobanashi Deceive 1", the pages where Kano is in the Kagerou Daze are black with white text. This phenomenon happens occasionally throughout the novels, and it is theorized that these black pages indicate that the narrator is speaking with a snake, thus indicating that Kano is speaking with the Snake of Deceiving Eyes.
  • The English translations localize mentions of keigo, Japanese honorifics, to Seto apologizing or by omitting them.[1]
