Kagerou Daze VI -over the dimension- (カゲロウデイズ VI -over the dimension-) is the sixth light novel volume.

The novel is narrated by Shintaro Kisaragi and Haruka Kokonose. It covers Haruka's backstory up to his death, as well as Haruka and Shintaro's present day meeting of the Novel Route while in the Kagerou Daze.

Summary[]

Daze1[]

(daze1)

Without any memories of how he got there, Shintaro finds himself in the Kagerou Daze, which appears as a pure-white world, watching a TV that plays credits in gibberish. The setting and the fact that he isn't the type to watch films unsettles Shintaro. He thinks that he likely died and had forgotten whatever he just watched on the TV. He suddenly is able to read the credits listing his own name as the star and realizes that he must have just watched his own life. As he freaks out, Shintaro hears a familiar voice behind him and finds a metal door, behind which is Haruka in a hospital bed. The two greet each other and, after some conversation, Haruka begins to tell Shintaro about his past.

Lost Days ∙ 1[]

(lost days - 1)

Haruka contemplates the end of summer and thinks about what he would like to do next year, though the thought also disturbs him. He then realizes that class is almost over and that he hasn't made much progress when his only classmate, Takane, interrupts his thoughts to ask on his work. He sees their teacher, Kenjirou Tateyama, sleeping at his desk. Despite being from different class levels, Haruka and Takane were put together in the same class due to being disabled. Takane teases Haruka for not making any enemy character designs for the video game of their upcoming school festival booth, despite him suggesting make it a shooting game. Haruka expects her to keep pestering him, which she does.
Haruka reflects that their school festival is to happen in a week, which means their current progress isn't good. Their school's festival has become a popular event in the city, especially last year when it held a concert with a popular band. Haruka knows that Takane, not a student there at the time, attended the concert, and suspects that it motivated her to join the school. The two of them had not expected to run their own booth until the day before, when Kenjirou told them the change of plans. Takane rants about Kenjirou's promise to the school administrator to make a great booth and, while somewhat agreeing, Haruka placates her by saying he's looking forward to it.
Haruka then points out that it was Takane's suggestion to make a video game, which is an even higher hurdle and what caused Kenjirou to pull an all nighter as the game's programmer. Takane dismisses this and tells Haruka to keep working. Haruka tries, but he finds himself at an art block with creating even one out of 20 character designs, especially since he doesn't game himself. Haruka asks Takane for suggestions, and she says zombies, which he rejects in fear. She then suggests designs based off of animals. Haruka, remembering a childhood anime (implied to be Pokémon), decides to go with that.
Haruka reflects on the point-based system of the game and how they'd lose their only prize, a taxidermy specimen of a fish, if she lost. Despite all their circumstances, he is still genuinely looking forward to the festival and their booth. He and Takane smile at each other before she asks him about the game's name, and he shows her his suggestion, Headphone Actor.
Later that night, Haruka falls asleep at his bedroom desk after making his 19th character design, based off animals from a nature encyclopedia, and wakes up around one in the morning. He's excited to show his progress to Takane later but realies that he had already referenced everything in the encyclopedia, so he doesn't know what to do for the 20th design, the final boss. He then gets a call from Kenjirou, who figured Haruka would be awake. Kenjirou advises Haruka to not overwork himself, but Haruka says that he wants to work hard since he’s going to die in one year. Haruka thinks about his estranged relationship with his father and how his illness was once shared with his mother, who passed away while he was young. By the end of the call, Haruka gets an idea for the 20th character and asks Kenjirou if he has a picture of Takane.

Lost Days ∙ 2[]

(lost days - 2)

Six days before the festival, Haruka goes to Mr. Tateyama’s house for an extra “crunch time” session. He was previously told that Mr. Tateyama's daughter, Ayano, will open the door for him. He is startled to see her staring out the window instead of getting him and is instead greeted by Mr. Tateyama. Haruka explores, and, unbeknownst to him, Kano locks him inside of Ayaka’s library. Ayano opens the door and apologizes to Haruka for her siblings’ mischief, marking their first meeting.

Lost Days ∙ 3[]

(lost days - 3)

Ayano guides Haruka into the guest room, and the two converse before Haruka hands over a cake he bought for the family. Ayano accepts it and offers Haruka a meal. Ayano warns Haruka about her siblings before going to the kitchen.
Haruka doesn’t pry, and thinks about Takane, the only one he’s comfortable around. While Haruka thinks of saying her name aloud, Kano disguised as Ayano with Deceiving Eyes confronts Haruka and accuses him of thinking dirty thoughts about Ayano. Haruka denies it, but Kano aggressively makes him promise to stop thinking dirty thoughts.
After the real Ayano finishes cooking, Haruka asks Ayano whether she has a twin sister. Ayano gets flustered and walks off to confront Kano, whom Haruka hears scream, though he wonders why he hears a boy's voice instead of a girl's.

Lost Days ∙ 4[]

(lost days - 4)

At one in the morning and two days before the school festival, Haruka returns to the Tateyama house from the convenience store, from which he had won a raffle and a prize.
Haruka feels bad for Mr. Tateyama overworking himself and dubs himself the food-and-drink supplier, as Mr. Tateyama had asked for coffee. Haruka walks through the house carefully to not disturb the family and thinks over how time flies and how he hasn’t run into any of the siblings since. Reaching the upstairs hallway, Haruka notices his room’s door is half open, and a tiny shadow—Seto’s pet hamster, Hanao—runs up and bites Haruka’s leg. Seto arrives and apologizes, and Haruka assures him it is fine and that he wont' tell Ayano. The two introduce themselves. Seto starts to leave, but Haruka stops him and offers him pudding, which he bought at the store.
After eating together, Seto is happy, and Haruka recalls Mr. Tateyama looking shocked seeing Seto with him when Haruka brought him coffee. He thinks that all of Ayano's siblings seem to be shy. Seto asks Haruka if he’s here to work on festival preparations, which Haruka confirms and offers Seto to visit them. Seto declines but says that Ayano, Kido, and Kano will be visiting instead. Seto tells Haruka he’s rooting for him, and that he’s going on an interview to be a paperboy in order to “change”, confusing Haruka, before the boy says that his mother and Kenjirou's wife, Ayaka, is dead. Haruka is shocked at this revelation since Mr. Tateyama had never mentioned it nor shown any sadness, the thought depressing him as Seto explains his father likely doesn’t want anyone to see his sadness. Seto brings up that Mr. Tateyama calls Haruka his pride and joy, and an enlightening moment of the man’s drunkenness. Haruka thinks over how the siblings must really want to protect Ayano.
Haruka, feeling awkward, says that it's 2 AM and they should go to bed. Seto apologizes, and they say good luck to each other. However, Seto pauses and sways, and Haruka supports his back. Seto explains he gets occasionally dizzy. Haruka asks if he needs medicine, but Seto brushes it off and apologizes for making him worry.
While attempting to sleep, Haruka finds trouble due to thinking about Mr. Tateyama’s wife and what sort of woman she was, and the burdens the family have had to deal with, like Ayano needing to step up in her mother’s absence. Haruka feels that it is impressive how Seto is trying to “change”, while grieving how he himself isn’t helping anyone persevere. As Haruka falls asleep, he wonders if this is how dying feels like.

Lost Days ∙ 5[]

(lost days - 5)

The chapter opens with Takane playing the school festival game Headphone Actor with perfect precision, shocking Haruka who sees another side to her. The day of the festival is here, and Haruka thinks to himself that for the first time he’s realized how cool someone playing a game could be, admiring her. After another victory, Haruka praises her and comments that he could call her “Ene”, prompting her to tell him to shut up. Haruka ponders again how Takane is amazing with her large following of fans. Applause thunders as Haruka looks over the audience, and Haruka claims that it was all started by their first guest who told his friends about the school festival online, leading to Takane’s fans to storm the school.
Haruka is impressed by how the tension between Takane and the next challenger feels like a real sporting event. As the battles continue to commence Haruka forgets to check the clock and number of people in the audience, reluctantly turning to do that and realizing they have under 15 minutes until closing. Haruka is interrupted by Ayano who is in awe from the success of the scene. Haruka takes note of a boy in a red hoodie —Shintaro—as Ayano introduces him. Shintaro challenges Takane, and Haruka alerts her to throw the game on purpose in order to pick a winner.
Haruka watches Takane have a chat with Shintaro and wonders what they’re talking about. He notices Ayano watching it worriedly as well, and later expresses that she’s worried for Shintaro being mean to Takane. Haruka connects Ayano’s behavior adjacent to a worried mom, and assures her that Takane can be patient, before she immediately announces she won’t lose, staking bets and visibly upset, much to Haruka’s surprise. Haruka and Ayano apologize simultaneously. Haruka then realizes that Takane cranked the difficulty to maximum, alerting Haruka that the girl is most definitely pissed, which startles Ayano.
Haruka is only able to describe the scene as intense, unsure of who is going to win after seeing Shintaro’s skill. Haruka internally thanks them for making it more fun, and thinks to himself that he’s going to make pins of them, as the final ten seconds approach. Haruka finds himself feeling extremely jealous, wanting to be as good as Takane and play a game with her too, wishing he had that sort of future in store, staring with envious eyes.
After Takane loses, Haruka finds himself speechless and fumbles with words, but ends up going with what he feels by congratulating her anyways.
Haruka desperately chases after Shintaro to give him the prize. Shintaro is dubious and after Haruka explains it’s the prize for winning the shooting gallery, Shintaro pushes it away with the claim he doesn’t need it. Haruka asks him to take it anyway as a sort of memory of the day, not knowing what to do to convince the hooded boy. Haruka asks the boy if he was with Ayano today, which he confirms. Haruka then asserts that Ayano would like it if Shintaro gave the prize to her, as he is very sure Ayano likes Shintaro. Haruka is proud and dubs himself as playing Cupid for the “lovebirds”, but Shintaro plainly asks if Haruka could give the prize to Ayano directly. Haruka, frantic, continues following Shintaro to usher the prize to him, until they reach the front door, wherein Haruka bumps into a female student selling soda, which gives him an idea.
Haruka offers to give Shintaro a soda, frantic and fervent, which slightly scares Shintaro who has no choice but to accept the offer. Haruka is overjoyed that he finally stopped Shintaro, speaking to Takane in his mind that he succeeded.
Sitting at a bench, Shintaro drinks the soda and is pleasantly surprised by the taste, which makes Haruka wonder if the boy never tried soda before. Shintaro explains he never picked it up since he doesn’t like sugary stuff, seeming uninterested shortly after. The scene cuts to Shintaro confirming if Haruka wants him to give the prize to Ayano. Haruka assures, and Shintaro mentions he has a sister he can give the prize to if Ayano doesn’t like it. Haruka ponders that Shintaro seems like a nice kid after all and a good gamer, and asks if the boy has played in competitions before. Shintaro explains he doesn’t, and that the game is very easy, making Haruka think to himself that Shintaro and Takane seem incompatible. Haruka expresses his awe and jealousy aloud and feels like an idiot for doing so, but gets lost in thoughts wishing he could be at Shintaro’s level so that he can play with Takane. Shintaro states Haruka should just play if he wants to, offering game recommendations, which makes Haruka ecstatic.

Lost Days ∙ 6[]

(lost days - 6)

A voice says to Haruka that speaking late at night in a classroom is pretty romantic. Haruka rejects this idea embarrassedly.
Several months have passed since the school festival. Haruka is glad to buy a new PC after not spending any of the money he was gifted for New Year’s. Haruka is currently talking to Shintaro through a software he recommended. Haruka would play online games with Shintaro as a nightly ritual, in awe over online games. These days Haruka has been playing -Dead Bullet 1989-, what he calls Takane’s “home turf”, as his name tag “Konoha” has been gaining more recognition in lobbies. While Haruka has overcome his fear of zombies, he feels that Shintaro has even more serious phobia of it.
Dialogue ensues where Shintaro compliments Haruka’s skills, prompting thanks. Haruka calls Shintaro a good teacher.
Today, Haruka is playing Pumpkin Shooter, a free to play game with Halloween motifs that Haruka and Shintaro both like. Shintaro comments that Haruka has gotten “really good” and that he could beat Takane next time. Haruka, bashful, claims he couldn’t and that Takane is too tough for him. Shintaro correctly guesses that Haruka doesn’t want to play Takane in case he loses badly, causing her to not play with him again.
Through the headphones Haruka hears Shintaro’s sister Momo speaking and asking if she can play with him. Haruka tells Shintaro he can end the call if he’d like, hearing the boy usher Momo away. Momo angrily announces she won’t ever play video games with him, which prompts a nonchalant reply, making Haruka ponder how harsh Shintaro is being. Momo reveals that she wanted to practice for arcade event next week, and that she wanted to ask Shintaro for help first. Shintaro is surprised by this revelation, before Momo storms off, making Shintaro pause. Haruka hears silence before Shintaro apologizes, realizing he was still on call. Haruka suggests him to speak with their parents first, but he rejects this idea since their parents would ground Momo for going to an arcade. Then, Haruka prompts Shintaro to hit the arcade next weekend to visit the event.
Haruka and Shintaro, dressed as Frankenstein and Dracula respectively, walk in a busy crowd, while the latter gets lost easily and is overwhelmed by the masses. The event is oversized and requires a Halloween costume to enter. Haruka and Shintaro try to find Momo, finding a crazy outfit and linking that to Momo. Takane calls Haruka and wonders where he is, mentioning that it is Ayano’s birthday, and that they have been texting buds for a while now. Haruka is unsure whether to reveal that he is with Shintaro, considering the boy is a bitter rival of Takane’s. Nevertheless, Haruka lies on the spot that he’s going shopping, internally apologizing to Takane. However, Takane asks if Shintaro is with him, which Haruka confirms, and reveals that she just wants to know whether Shintaro has a birthday present for Ayano or not. Takane shortly hangs up after sharing she’s going on a trip with Ayano currently, while Haruka feels guilty for lying to Takane.
Haruka catches up to Shintaro who’s at the main stage, patting his shoulder and asking what’s wrong. Shintaro reveals that Momo was unhappy with his arrival and that she claimed she’d never call him her brother again, extremely disheartened by this. Haruka is surprised to see how much Momo affected Shintaro’s emotions, and attempts to comfort him as the event progresses. A person in a Gourd outfit strikes a wacky pose and shouts “Pump-kiiiin!” and Haruka realizes Momo is the one doing the voice, simply. Haruka realizes their worries were for naught and wonders why they picked Momo to do a simple voice line out of all people. Shintaro bangs his head on the wall and accepts that he’s no longer Momo’s brother after her words, still devastated by the attack. Haruka spots a giant “squid” trophy and says that Momo would like it, and challenges Shintaro to together join the competition to win it. As they sign up, Haruka passes by a couple of girls — revealed later as Takane and Ayano — dressed as witches, their faces blocked, and feels deja vu but skims over it.
Haruka and an unhappy and tired Shintaro make it to the final round on the big stage, but find themselves matched against Takane and Ayano — who don’t recognize the boys due to their faces being concealed by masks. Haruka figures there’ll be repercussions after he lied to Takane, and considers leaving the tournament but holds his ground so he can help fix Shintaro’s relationship with Momo. Takane comments that the boys look freaky due to their costumes, and Ayano scolds her, but internally Haruka agrees with the former. Haruka feels a mixture of morbid joy and fear to be finally playing against Takane, but is nervous and consults Shintaro about it, who comforts him that he’ll do fine, melting Haruka’s tension away as they prepare to fight.
Shintaro and Haruka end up winning. The scene cuts to Momo excitedly receiving the trophy from Shintaro, who tells her that she should thank Haruka as well, which she does. Haruka tries to restrain his smile as they exit the arcade, and come across Takane and Ayano. Takane leers at Haruka and tells him he should just tell her next time and not lie, and he doesn’t say anything in response as he swears to himself he’ll never lie again. Ayano is in high spirits to see Shintaro and meet Momo. Takane is upset to have not known she was playing against Shintaro, who then mocks her for being mad over losing to Haruka. Takane claims she was simply startled when Haruka called out her name in the middle of the match and that her wrist was hurting, as they continue arguing. Ayano talks to Momo in the background eagerly as the group heads to Momo’s house to do a late birthday party for Ayano. Haruka is hit with the sudden realization this is the last time he can celebrate Ayano’s birthday, but tries to stop himself from overthinking, feeling consumed by despair.

Lost Days ∙ 7[]

(lost days - 7)

Around ten days into summer break, Haruka sadly wonders how many days it’s been since he first played against Takane, ruminating and feeling like he’s going to lose his mind from not moving. The door opens and Shintaro greets him, commenting on how hot the weather is before taking out a souvenir — a cake — for Haruka. Haruka brings up the first time Shintaro drank the soda, to which the boy laughingly explains he now can’t go a day without soda, all thanks to Haruka. Here, they laugh and talk with each other, while Haruka thinks to himself that he’d consider Shintaro a friend, as well as Takane. Haruka still feels down as he knows he’s due to die soon, getting lost in thought. Haruka describes the nights as hard, since he continually ponders what dying is like and feels nausea from the thoughts, unable to imagine it, wondering if there’s a heaven, or nothing but darkness.
Shintaro’s voice brings Haruka back to reality. Haruka’s breath stops for a moment, so Shintaro, grievously concerned, jumps to get help, but Haruka stops him and claims he’s okay. Haruka feels guilty for being happy that Shintaro is worried for him, and that he hates himself for burdening a close friend. Haruka stares out the window since talking is starting to pain him, both silent, but Shintaro whispers he hopes that Haruka gets better soon. Haruka wanted to answer with a simple agreement, but says that he never is going to. Haruka relays the truth and says he’s going to die soon. He says he’s never had such a good friend as Shintaro, and that he wants Shintaro to live a full life, but soon regrets his words and asks Shintaro to head home soon. However, Shintaro starts crying and is firm to say he doesn’t want Haruka to die. Haruka starts madly crying as well and asks for help, claiming he is scared, while Shintaro pats his back. At some point Haruka falls asleep and when he wakes up, he finds Shintaro on the carpet, to which he places a blanket on him and sets off to walk around. Haruka doesn’t want to waste anymore time and wishes he could have Konoha challenge Ene to a match one last time to wrap things up.

Lost Days ∙ 8[]

(lost days - 8)

On August 15th, Haruka hears the fire ambulance as he falls in and out of conscious. He hears Takane’s voice telling him to hang in there, and is in so much pain he is unable to feel anything anymore, like the part of him that feels pain is dead, as Haruka claims it makes him feel lonely. Haruka can barely hear Takane and can only tell she sounds sad, internally apologizing to her that he couldn’t give anything in return. Internally, he tells Takane she can punch him and do anything if it makes her get over it, since she’s angry. He states that Takane will meet wonderful people later on, and that she’s a kind, gentle girl who needs to keep smiling and be happy, asking her to stop crying.
Haruka feels like the echoes are fading away and wonders if he’s dying, and that he doesn’t want to accept this, wishing he wasn’t born in his weak body, and that he could play more with Takane, Shintaro, Ayano, and Mr. Tateyama, and be with them forever. However, Haruka hears a voice asking if that’s what he truly wants, before he feels his consciousness turning off.
Haruka sees pure white all around him in a strange space, in a bed with many IV drips, unable to move an inch. The voice, low and guttural claims it has heard Haruka’s wish, before the boy sees someone familiar — Konoha, his game avatar, who the voice claims is Haruka’s ideal body. Haruka tries to resist this as black begins to swallow Konoha. The voice tells Haruka that Konoha is going to his friends, and that it is glad Haruka has a wish for it. Under the pretense of a wish the voice snatches away Konoha’s body. The voice tells Haruka there are many more worse than itself, one of the, being the “main” reason of him arriving here.
Haruka hears the sneering laugh of Mr. Tateyama, possessed by the voice, cold and calculating. Haruka sees a large array of monitors and comes face to face with Takane’s body behind Mr. Tateyama, who announces she is dead.

Daze2[]

(daze2)

Haruka finishes up telling Shintaro his story of the last year he was alive and questions him again on if he realized where he was and how he got there. Shintaro responds that he can't remember then Haruka solemnly reveals Shintaro was killed by him, specifically by Black Konoha, and Shintaro realizes then that he's in the Kagerou Daze. Haruka then bursts into tears and begs Shintaro to kill Konoha so he'll stop killing them.
