Kagerou Daze IV -the missing children- (カゲロウデイズIV -the missing children-) is the fourth light novel volume.

The novel is narrated by Azami, Shintaro Kisaragi, and Ene. It covers Azami's backstory and some Mekakushi Dan members' visit to her home on August 16th in the Novel Route.

Summary[]

The introduction, which doesn't have a chapter title or place in the table of contents, is the first entry of Azami's diary, which she started at her husband's suggestion. She reflects on her young daughter, who got chased by a bee earlier. Azami remarks that her daughter's curiosity is like her own at that age, and she wonders how many more summers the three will have together.
In the next shown entry, she describes being in the Kagerou Daze, where she feels nothing and is trapped.

Reaper Record I[]

(Shinigami Record I) (シニガミレコードI Shinigami Rekōdo I)

Azami, unnamed at this time, describes her beginning. By observing the world between her blinks, she learns of change and becomes curious, so she travels while remaining undetected by the life that eventually inhabited it. One day, she enters a cave that has a pond and sees a creature resembling a "black mass" looking at her, which she realizes is actually her own reflection. Azami thinks about herself for a long time and concludes that she doesn't know anything about herself nor her origins, which disappoints her.
Azami wishes for a form that's easier to understand and sees red eyes appear in her reflection. She then sees humans carrying torches behind her, and they attack and set her on fire. Azami desperately wishes to not die and suddenly is able to understand them when one calls her a monster. While succumbing to her pain, she hears the men call out about snakes and flee.
Azami recovers while feeling fear of death and pain for the first time. She remembers the "snakes" the men shouted about and sees a black one, which scares her, but the snake says that it won't harm her since she's not human. Azami begins crying, though neither her nor the snake know why. The snake tells her that she is unlike any other creature it has seen before.
Azami realizes that the humans called her a monster and might know something about her. They discuss that her appearing as a human might stop them from attacking her, and Azami looks back to her reflection to see herself as a human female, which startles her. The snake tells Azami that she has changed to look like this since they began talking. The snake leaves, and Azami starts her journey to meet with the humans to find out more about herself.

Shintaro dreams of Ayano complaining to him about their class, but, when he responds rudely as usual, she uncharacteristically confronts him about his habit of looking at porn. Shintaro is stunned and denies the accusation, which Ayano reacts to dismissively. She asks if he wants to know who told her and, to answer, says, "Did you forget about me, master?"
Shintaro wakes up blurting out Ene's name. Kido answers that it's her, not Ene, before trying to wake Konoha. Shintaro thinks about how lately he's been dreaming more about Ayano, which he would do almost daily when he met Ene. He and Ene got into a severe argument when she woke him up from one of these dreams, and Shintaro apologized the next day.
Shintaro goes to the kitchen where Kido is making breakfast to ask if Kano has anything against him. Kido replies that she thought Kano liked Shintaro and that Kano is actually a good guy, despite his behavior. Shintaro, seeing how forlorn Kido looks, reassures her that it must have been a dream, and Kido smiles at him.
Back at the living room, Shintaro sees Marry looking for Ene in his phone and realizes it must have died, so he asks Marry for a charging cable. Marry finds the cable with a snakeskin tangled in it and accidentally scares Kido with it. He learns that his sister Momo went out with Hibiya to search for Hiyori and that Seto went to work. Konoha awakens, and the four eat breakfast.
They discuss Marry's past, and she describes how she and her mother, who are Meduas's whose eyes can turn people into stone, were attacked by strangers. When Marry awoke, her mother was gone. She doesn't remember well because the incident happened more than a hundred summers ago, and her age shocks Shintaro and Kido. Konoha suggests going to Marry's home to learn more about her. Shintaro turns his phone back on and realizes that Ene isn't there, so he assumes that she's with Momo.

Reaper Record II[]

(Shinigami Record II) (シニガミレコードII Shinigami Rekōdo II)

A crowd forms as Azami, still unnamed at this time, yells at a gatekeeper to stand aside so that she can talk to the owner of the home, who had promised her more information about herself but instead sold her to people who treated her like an animal. She tells him that she went through horrible things and even took a cannonball to the stomach, a claim which the people laugh at her for. Azami sees the man she's after watching her with fear from his window, and guards with swords arrive. Azami grows frustrated and turns one of the men to stone with Locking Eyes before using Drawing Eyes on everyone to quiet them, though she also inadvertently uses Stealing Eyes and hears some of their thoughts. Azami realizes that no one knows anything about her and cries while wishing to whatever created her to give her an end.
After that encounter, Azami decides to no longer interact with humans and uses Drawing Eyes and Focusing Eyes to find the "least noticed" place in the world. To get there, she crosses the ocean originally by boat but swims after she is thrown overboard by other passengers, and she drowns many times on the way. Azami reaches a forest and finally arrives at a clearing, which she finds perfect for a house.
Azami loses herself in thought as she thinks, a habit of hers that can take days. She decides aloud to get to work, and a young, white-haired man in a soldier's uniform answers her, startling her. Azami angrily tells him to go away since she has to build a house, and he offers to help her. Azami questions his intentions, and he mentions that he wanted to take a closer look at her, which confuses Azami. He says he'll help her in any way possible, so she points to the ground and tells him to build a house there and then leave. He hesitates only for a moment before agreeing enthusiastically, and Azami thinks he must be insane.
The young man asks for Azami's name, and she replies that she doesn't have one. He introduces himself as Tsukihiko and agrees to not run away from her.

Shintaro, Kido, and Konoha wait outside of Marry's cottage as she tidies up inside. Kido makes fun of Shintaro for vomiting up soda during their trek there, and Shintaro questions the mountain gear that she provided him that caused him to overheat. They also discuss how there seems to be no resources around and that Marry and her mother apparently didn't need to eat. Konoha, who carried most of their supplies, checks in on Shintaro before Marry opens the door for them. Shintaro notices she's now wearing a necklace with a tinkling key.
Inside, they admire Marry's cottage, which is lined with filled bookshelves and, according to Marry, built by her grandfather. Kido tells Shintaro that she wants to live there. They look through the books for hints about Marry's origins, though Konoha gets distracted by a book with a dragon illustration and Kido by Marry's "secret" sketchbook, which depicts Marry fighting then dancing with a dragon. Marry is very embarrassed and reacts when Shintaro asks if there's a diary anywhere, but he clarifies that he meant her mother's. She remembers that her mother owned one, and they have Konoha check the shelves and then the yard.
Shintaro deduces that Marry's necklace has an extra, smaller key on it, thus the the tinkling noise. He looks around for a lock and sees one at a desk, which Marry says she never noticed before. Kido finally stops laughing at Marry's drawings and joins them before Marry unlocks the desk and pulls out a large, blue book. Konoha returns from the yard, and Shintaro picks up the book while the others gather around him. With Marry's permission, they read the diary, which Shintaro describes in hindsight to be "deeper than deep itself" and "sadder than sadness itself" and that he doubts he will ever forget "those women". He notes that the word on the first page is the name "Azami".

Reaper Record III[]

(Shinigami Record III) (シニガミレコードIII Shinigami Rekōdo III)

On the 1,014th day since Azami met Tsukihiko, Azami watches Tsukihiko work on her finished house while it's raining and prepares him a bath for when he's done in the shack that he prepared for them to rest at.
On the 1,032nd day, Azami sees Tsukihiko fall off the roof and is unable to save him with her abilities. She gets angry at his recklessness when she finds him unharmed and tells him to stop working on the roof for the day and instead prepare her bath. Azami comes back to find that Tsukihiko didn't heed her requests, so she decides to not speak to him for the rest of the day.
On the 1,058th day, Tsukihiko goes back to his home to get food and doesn't return when he says he would. Azami worries about him and realizes that his past actions can only be explained if he loves her.
The next day, Tsukihiko returns injured, and Azami cries uncontrollably upon seeing him. He tells her about how, on the day they met, he was returning from the army because they told him he was useless. When he found Azami, he was felt happy to be useful to someone as pretty as her. While he is able to sustain himself because he has land, the other villagers shun Tsukihiko for his appearance. Azami wants revenge, but Tsukihiko stops her.
Azami tells him to never go back to the village, and Tsukihiko apologizes before asking Azami to be his wife. She agrees, and they embrace.
On the 1,072nd day, during summer, Azami and Tsukihiko stand before the finished house. Before they go inside, she notices a flower, which Tsukihiko left because he found it cute. Azami asks for its name, and Tsukihiko tells her it's a thistle flower (i.e. "azami").

Children Record V[]

(チルドレンレコードV Chirudoren Rekōdo V)

After they finish reading the diary, Marry gets upset with Shintaro for suggesting that her grandmother, Azami, is the cause of their whole situation. She storms outside with Konoha following her. Shintaro and Kido discuss his suggestion and the diary's contents, which contains information about Azami's ten eye abilities, including a unique one called Clearing Eyes, and about the other world. Kido suggests calling the other world the "Kagerou Daze" and explains to Shintaro that it appears ephemerally like a "heat haze" ("kagerou") and "dazes" those that enter it. Shintaro earnestly doesn't care, and Kido tells him that she'll explain it further to the others later.
Shintaro and Kido go out to find Marry, who he finds across a deep ravine because a bee chased her. He doesn't trust himself to cross the log that Marry used as a bridge, and they wonder where Konoha is. The aforementioned bee arrives and flies at Shintaro, who runs away from it and off the ravine. As he falls, Shintaro thinks that this is how Ayano must have felt when she died, and he falls unconscious at impact.
When Shintaro wakes at the bottom of the ravine, he find Konoha impaled by a tree branch. He asks why Konoha would save someone like him, and Konoha replies that it's because they're friends. Shintaro, knowing that it's there, silently pleas to the snake and ability inside of Konoha to save him. Black snakes come out of Konoha's wound, and Shintaro watches as Konoha reconstructs himself with Awakening Eyes.

Reaper Record IV[]

(Shinigami Record IV) (シニガミレコードIV Shinigami Rekōdo IV)

Azami finishes writing the first entry of her journal and thinks that it's boring, but Tsukihiko arrives from putting their daughter to bed and compliments it. Azami reflects how she is happy with her new family. Tsukihiko goes to bed, and Azami, who doesn't sleep, doesn't accompany him. She thinks about how he has gotten noticeably older and how she wrote about her limited time with her family. She finds herself already crying at the thought of Tsukhiko's death, and she wishes to be with them forever.
Azami suddenly falls asleep and, in her dreams, speaks with the Snake of Clearing Eyes, though her own dialogue isn't shown. The Snake of Clearing Eyes welcomes its master and tells her that it already knows her wish, since they are the same. It tells Azami that it will work to fulfill her wish, though the wish's contents mean that she has changed over the years. It tells her that her wish is impossible to fulfill in this world, so she can use her abilities to create a new world where time repeats endlessly. It then sees that their time together is coming to a close, so it tells Azami that they will speak again when she next visits.

Children Record VI[]

(チルドレンレコードVI Chirudoren Rekōdo VI)

Back from the mountains and outside the hideout at nighttime, Shintaro wins an extra bottle of soda at a vending machine and gives it to Konoha. The two drink, and Shintaro is happy with both the beverage and Konoha seeming to like it. Shintaro reflects that Konoha, while seeming impassive, has a big heart, and he tells Konoha to not shoulder everyone's pain just because they're friends. The two return to the hideout to Kido and Marry, and Shintaro plops on a couch when he hears Momo and Hibiya return, so he greets them with low energy.

Headphone Actor V[]

(ヘッドフォンアクターV Heddofon Akutā V)

Ene wanders in the Internet, which she hasn't explored much in the past two years. She thinks about how she's now fully "Ene" who acts as Shintaro's "idol", and she also gets angry at the thought of Konoha. She decides to go to a specific URL and accesses an inbox, which has an email that she received two years ago. Ene types a reply apologizing for not writing sooner because of her disbelief at the receiver and that "the others" have started gathering like the receiver had said. She thinks about how even Shintaro and Momo got involved, and Ene writes, "You're over there, aren't you, Ayano? I'm sorry. I promise we're going to save you." She says they will meet up once they beat "Clearing", and she signs off the email with "Takane Enomoto".

Afterword: A Sight for Sore Eyes[]

(~あとがき『目が腐る話』~)

Jin thanks the readers for their support. He says that, similarly with Hibiya in the last novel volume, he took to liking Azami when writing her point of view. He dismisses the thought of Shintaro applying to this statement and changes the subject to how he wrote this volume in the summer when the last one came out only in spring. He says that he'll soon be running from his editors again and that his room is 60% garbage. He realizes that he basically wrote the same things in the last afterword, but he doesn't know what else a twenty-two year old who spends all his time writing at home would say. He gives a shout-out to readers who told him at autograph events that they look forward to his afterwords.
Jin says that one of his female cousins started reading and that her favorite is Kano, so he knows who to make vomit next. His personal favorite male character is Haruka, who seems to smells nice to him. Jin also says that, despite his complaining, he has enjoyed writing and earnestly wishes he could befriend the Mekakushi Dan himself. He jokes about putting himself into the novels, maybe as the Kagerou Daze itself.

Trivia[]

  • Though unconfirmed, it is likely that Shintaro speaks with the Snake of Retaining Eyes at the beginning of "Children Record III". However, these pages are not black in the original Japanese prints (see below).
  • In the original Japanese prints of the novel, in chapter "Shinigami Record IV", the pages where Azami speaks with the Snake of Clearing Eyes are black with white text. This phenonemon happens occasionally throughout the novels, and it is theorized that these black pages indicate that the narrator is speaking with a snake.

Errors[]

  • In the official English adaptation of "Headphone Actor V", Ene writes in her email to Ayano that they will beat "Awakening", while it is meant to be "Clearing".
