Kagerou Daze II  -a headphone actor- (カゲロウデイズII -a headphone actor-) is the second light novel volume.

The novel is narrated by Takane Enomoto and Shintaro Kisaragi. It covers Takane's backstory leading up to her transformation into Ene as well as Shintaro's events in the amusement park on August 15th of the Novel Route's present day.

Summary[]

Headphone Actor I[]

(ヘッドフォンアクターI Heddofon Akutā I)

Takane, in an unfamiliar hallway, hears from a radio broadcast that the world is going to end today. A voice from her headphones, which she realizes is her own, tells her to run to a faraway hill to survive, so she begins running.

Yuukei Yesterday I[]

(夕景イエスタデイI Yūkei Iesutadei I)

Takane Enomoto is currently a first year high school student with a disability that causes her to faint frequently and feel tired regardless of how much sleep she gets. Six months ago, she was put into a special accommodations program for it. Takane goes to school, which is having a festival soon, and to her classroom, which is a science storage classroom. There, she finds her only classmate, Haruka Kokonose, wet and in only his boxers. He explains that he fell into a fountain, and she begins putting his still wet clothes back onto him. Their teacher, Kenjirou Tateyama, walks into them and misunderstands the situation, but Takane makes him stay and dress Haruka back up.
Afterwards, Mr. Tateyama tells them that, despite what he had said beforehand, they now have to make a festival booth to please the school administrator, and Takane realizes that he spent their budget on a taxidermy specimen of a rare fish. They decide to make a shooting game with Mr. Tateyama as the programmer, Haruka as the artist, and Takane as the opponent that visitors would play against. Anyone who wins will get their grand prize. Mr. Tateyama reveals to Haruka that Takane is qualified to hold a winning streak because she had placed second in a national tournament for a popular FPS game, Dead Bullet -1989-. Takane anticipates a negative reaction from Haruka, but this only excites Haruka instead, and they begin to prepare for the festival.

Headphone Actor II[]

(ヘッドフォンアクターII Heddofon Akutā II)

Takane listens to directions from the voice in her headphones and runs through a crumbling city, ignoring its citizens. The voice reminds her that there is "someone" she needs to see, and Takane reaches the hill.

Yuukei Yesterday II[]

(夕景イエスタデイII Yūkei Iesutadei II)

At the school festival, Takane plays their class’ game Headphone Actor against an opponent and weeps because of the large crowd around them and Haruka calling her “Ene”. Their first opponent was a man that recognizes Takane as her gaming identity, “Dancing Flash Ene”, after she beats him. After, she wins against Tsubomi Kido, who is visiting the festival with Shuuya Kano, though neither introduce themselves and Kido uses Concealing Eyes to cheat. After a lunch break, a crowd of Takane’s fans arrive to play against her, and Takane reluctantly concdes to play with them, leading to the present situation.
Takane’s last opponent is a boy in a jersey. She plans to lose against him on purpose to give up the prize, but then he provokes her, so she sets the game to its highest difficulty and bets that the winner will do whatever the loser wants. For example, she would call him "Master" if he won. The boy wins with a perfect score and says to forget the bet before leaving. Haruka follows him to give him the prize. The boy’s companion, Ayano Tateyama, apologizes to Takane for his behavior.
Af the festival’s end, Takane gets mad at Haruka for being late to return by getting leftover food from the booths, as she thought he had trouble with his disability, which is life-threatening. They do not hear the announcement that they had won the title of best booth for the festival.

Headphone Actor III[]

(ヘッドフォンアクターIII Heddofon Akutā III)

At the hill, Takane finds a massive wall and realizes that the person that she was hoping to meet isn't here. Both her and the voice despair, and Takane says aloud, "I'm sorry, Takane," before looking at the disintegrating program around her and falling unconscious.

Yuukei Yesterday III[]

(夕景イエスタデイIII Yūkei Iesutadei III)

On August 15th, Takane and Haruka, now second year high school students, are in their classroom after their supplementary summer classes have ended for the day. Haruka, whose health has worsened since December, plays Dead Bullet -1989-, which he began playing after the festival, on his laptop with his game avatar, Konoha, and Takane becomes annoyed at him as she does homework. She pretends to ignore him for twenty minutes and, when she looks back to him, finds Haruka collapsed on his desk. She calls for help, and Mr. Tateyama arrives. They go to the hospital, where Mr. Tateyama reports that Haruka survived the attack.
Takane goes back to school with the excuse to get Haruka's belongings, though she actually wants to avoid seeing Haruka again. There, she meets Ayano. The two talk about Shintaro who rebukes Takane and advises her to tell Haruka to tell her how she really feels before it's too late.
Takane goes to the science storage room and decides to confess to Haruka. She turns around to run back to the hospital but then collapses. She sees a familiar figure (shown to be Kenjirou Tateyama in an illustration from Kagerou Daze V -the deceiving-) standing ahead of her. Before blacking out, she says, "Haruka, I love you."

Headphone Actor IV[]

(ヘッドフォンアクターIV Heddofon Akutā IV)

Takane wakes up in a dark space and feels as if she is floating without any pain or fatigue. A screen-like box appears, through which she sees a dark laboratory-like room and hears Mr. Tateyama's voice talk about a successful plan after a year of preparation. She then sees her own body on a bed in a large device and headphones around her ears and what appears to be Konoha in a cylindrical tank. Mr. Tateyama says something about opening up the "next Kagerou Daze'" and then says something to Konoha. Then, many windows with “DELETE” on them pop up around Takane, and she begins to disintegrate and sees only darkness again..
Takane then has an odd conversation with another being, who says that Takane has lost her body and that there is no place left for her in the real world. Takane says she still wants to get out, so the being tells her to open her eyes. Takane's eyes grow hot, and a flash of lightning breaks through the darkness. She opens her eyes to a login screen; after logging in, she begins her journey as Ene in the digital world.

Retrospect Forest[]

(Tsuisou Forest) (追想フォレスト Tsuisō Foresuto)

Back to the present day on August 15th, Shintaro walks to an amusement park, different from the one on top of the mall, which is closed due to the terrorist incident the day before, with his sister Momo, Ene in Momo’s phone, and other Mekakushi Dan members Seto and Marry. Kido and Kano had left them earlier and now join up with them by the entrance of the amusement park.
Later, Shintaro, unable to stand after riding a roller coaster with the others, sits on a bench with Seto and Kano before realizing that Ene is on Momo's phone. He walks away to enjoy being alone, but Marry finds him and has him accompany her to a pairs-only "ice castle". Inside, Marry becomes overwhelmed by the cold and ends up spilling tea from her thermos onto Shintaro, causing them to leave, and she flees from Shintaro afterwards.
Shintaro then runs into Kido, who has him accompany her to a haunted house attraction to find Momo. Shintaro realizes that Kido is scared and had abandoned Momo earlier, but she insistently denies her fear. When they reach Momo, she scares Kido with a fake axe prop and blood, causing Kido to faint. Momo cleans herself up and wakes up Kido, and the three leave. Shintaro learns from Kido that Ene had joined him after the earlier roller coaster ride.
Kido and Momo separate from Shintaro and Ene to gather up the rest of the Mekakushi Dan. Ene makes fun of Shintaro by playing from a custom-made soundboard she had made from his screams throughout the day and blackmails him into agreeing that they go around the park together. Shintaro reflects on Ene and faintly remembers something, but then he focuses back onto her and follows her directions.

Afterword: Too Terrible to Look At[]

(~あとがき『目もあてられない話』~)

Jin keeps a lighthearted, fun tone throughout his afterword. He thanks the reader for finishing -a headphone actor- and claims he wrote the novel with comedy romance elements because he's starved for affection, not because of his claim that he would if -in a daze- flopped. Like with the last novel, Jin wrote -a headphone actor- while simultaneously making a new album and now also performing live concerts, and thus he has not been feeling well. He makes dirty jokes and says that similar jokes in the last novel’s afterword embarrassed him when he learned that his mother brags about how he wrote a novel and that his younger sister’s friends read it as well.
Jin's sister also told him that Shintaro resembles him. Jin admits that he finds Shintaro to be gross, so he doesn't agree and dislikes the comparison. However, Jin told himself that if Shintaro got friendly with other women in this novel, maybe he would, too. He adds that his computer recently broke like Shintaro's, so there must be a connection. Thus, Shintaro got to have fun in this novel. Jin wonders when a cyber girl will enter his computer and claims that he has instead been talking to an adult pop-up ad that won't go away. He then says goodbye to the reader, thanks them for their support, and says he will see them again in the next novel's afterword.

Trivia[]

  • In the original Japanese prints of the novel, the page containing Takane's conversation with the unnamed being in chapter "Headphone Actor IV" is black in white text. This is the first instance of this occurring in the novel series.
    • By comparing them, it has been theorized that these black pages indicate that the narrator is speaking with a snake. Thus, it is implied that Takane is speaking with the Snake of Opening Eyes in this chapter.

Errors[]

  • In the English localization of "Headphone Actor III", Takane narrates that "she" isn't there and despairs that she can't tell "her" how she feels. In the Japanese text, she says "あいつ” (aitsu), which is gender neutral. Context and parallelism with Act 06: Headphone Actor indicate that she is actually talking about Haruka.
