Konoha's World Situation[]
(Konoha no Sekai Jijou) (コノハの世界事情 Konoha no Sekai Jijō)
- The unidentified narrator (Konoha and/or Haruka in Konoha's form) watches Hiyori run across a street. Another unnamed being, whom the narrator recognizes, tells him that doing anything is futile, since the "Queen" has left and his existence in this world is no longer. He stands and stares at Hiyori before reaching out to her. Like many times before, he is unable to touch her, and she instead passes through him. He waits for the next moment and its accompanying scream, but, instead, his vision distorts, and he finds that his body has stopped existing.
- The being tells him that it is over, that "he" has been chosen, and that the narrator is only here not because of his own will. The narrator replies that it must have been the being's power that brought him here instead, since it also gives him his current strength. The being replies that the narrator simply has the body that he wanted and orders him to go back. The narrator asks the being to relay a message to "the me on the other side", to which the being says it can make no promises. Internally, the narrator thinks that, if he can have one more wish, he would reach out to the "girl who kicked [his] dumb ass all the time".
Kagerou Daze 01[]
(カゲロウデイズ01 Kagerō Deizu 01)
- Hibiya rides the bus from school to his home. He wants a cellphone, but not many in his countryside town know about cellphones, not even the electronics store owner, except for Hiyori.
- Hiyori is from one of the richest families in the area and thus has been to the city, where she got a cellphone. Hibiya is "desperately" in love with her and calls himself the "ultimate Asahina fan" in comparison to her other fans. He wants a cellphone specifically to talk to Hiyori with, and he mumbles this desire aloud. At his stop, Hibiya realizes that his bus pass is missing. The driver lets him go, but not before teasing Hibiya about his ramblings about Hiyori, embarrassing him greatly.
- In his room, Hibiya spends four hours working on his "Talking Hiyori Doll", his three-month project and latest addition to his series of handmade Hiyori merchandise. Inside the doll is a small tape with recordings of Hiyori's voice that Hibiya collected over the past few weeks. Just as he is about to sew the final stitch into the doll, his mother yells that he has a phone call, causing him to drop the needle. It pierces the doll's torso, and Hibiya imagines, in horror, Hiyori with an iron rod pierced through her and dying in his arms. He then goes downstairs to take the phone call and realizes that Hiyori is on the other line.
- Hiyori tells him that she found his bus pass. Hibiya panics, as he puts in a picture of her into his bus pass holder every morning, but she then tells him that she can help him with his "wish". Hibiya misunderstands, believing that she saw the picture but now wants to go out with him. Hiyori offers to take him to the city with her during summer vacation, and, in return, he will not tell her parents and carry around her stuff. Hibiya concludes that Hiyori must really be in love with him to want to do all this stuff with him, but then she tells him that he needs to help her with meeting a famous new idol who happens to be her older sister's husband's student.
- Hibiya realizes that Hiyori only wants his help, and he questions why she said she would help him with his "wish". Hiyori, confused, explains that the trip will give him the opportunity to buy a cellphone, since she found a flyer about them in his bus pass holder. Hibiya realizes that he put the flyer in it by accident and that the photo of Hiyori was stolen by another one of her fans, who would not have wanted to keep his bus pass afterwards. He processes the misunderstanding before agreeing to join Hiyori in the city that summer.
Children Record 1[]
(チルドレンレコード1 Chirudoren Rekōdo 1)
- At the present day on August 15th, Shintaro watches a stretcher wheel out Hibiya into an examination room. At Ene's demands, he chased the ambulance carrying Hibiya and Konoha to the hospital and then gave his phone to Konoha so she could speak to him. Afterwards, however, she told Shintaro that she was mistaken and now is in a bad mood. When Shintaro asks about her behavior, she glares at him; the sight reminds him of someone, but he can't recall who.
- Konoha apologies for disappointing Ene and tells Shintaro that Ene had told him ‘I miss you’ and ‘I thought you were dead,' among other things, but he didn't know what she was talking about. Shintaro and Ene then insult each other before they heard crashing from the examination room. Inside, Shintaro finds Hibiya struggling to get up from the ground.
- Shintaro tries to help, but Hibiya refuses while muttering about getting to Hiyori. He accuses Konoha of the whole situation before running away. Shintaro argues with Ene about being unable to chase Hibiya, as his legs are worn out, and he asks Konoha for help. Konoha picks up Shintaro, hoists him over his shoulder, and moves at supernatural speeds to the hospital roof and then high into the air. Above, Konoha spots Hibiya running towards the hospital gate and lands nearby. Shintaro promptly vomits. He then looks at Konoha's pale pink eyes, which reminds him of the Mekakushi Dan, and accuses him of being similar to them, referring to their eye abilities.
- Shintaro refuses to go with Konoha again, but Konoha is too scared to face Hibiya alone. Shintaro has Ene dial Momo, who is hiding just outside the hospital gate with Kido and her Concealing Eyes, and tells her to catch Hibiya. Momo grabs Hibiya, thus coming into sight for both him and Shintaro, and brings the boy to her brother. Hibiya slips away from Momo's grasp by insulting her repeatedly, enraging her to the point of attacking, but Kido (still hidden) stops Momo by pulling on her hood. Shintaro asks Hibiya why he is in such a hurry, and Hibiya tells him that a girl important to him may have died, so he needs to get back to her. Shintaro suggests going to the police, but Hibiya tells Shintaro that Konoha can explain, as he watched Hiyori die without doing anything. Konoha, dazed by Hibiya's hatred towards him, tries to explain that he was unable to help. Hibiya walks off but then collapses, and Kido catches him before finally showing herself.
- Kido tells Shintaro that it would be best to not take Hibiya to the police, as his eyes are now turning red, marking that he has gained an eye ability like theirs. She instructs Momo to call Kano to prepare a room for Hibiya and to have Marry and Seto stay in Marry's room, to not disturb her. Kano doesn't pick up, so Momo calls Seto instead, who tells her that Kano went out for the rest of the day. Kido asks for Konoha's name, his answering causing Ene to buzz Shintaro's phone, and then she tells him to come along with them. The group begins to walk back to the hideout while hidden by Kido's Concealing Eyes.
- Ene asks Shintaro if they can go home with Momo, but Shintaro declines, as he's concerned and curious about Hibiya. Confused about her behavior since seeing Konoha, he asks if she has a low battery and promises to plug in his phone once they got to the hideout. Ene, surprised, remarks that he has changed a lot and that he does well being bossed around. Her sad smile reminds Shintaro of someone else's, but he puts the memory away as he usually does. Ene, back to her normal self, boasts that she does well bossing him around and teases that he might fall for her; Shintaro banters back and internally tells himself to recharge his phone as soon as possible.
Kagerou Daze 02[]
(カゲロウデイズ02 Kagerō Deizu 02)
- Hibiya and Hiyori ride the train to the city. Hibiya is excited by the scenery, which annoys and embarrasses Hiyori. Hibiya recalls how, in the past few weeks leading up to the trip, Hiyori did not treat him any differently or kindlier. Their only conversations to plan the trip were from phone calls initiated by her. To convince them to let him go, Hibiya lied to his parents that the city had a special program on Indian culture that he is desperately interested in. When they get off the train, Hibiya is surprised by how crowded the station is and then gets stuck at the ticket gate, greatly embarrassing Hiyori. She walks away from him quickly, and Hibiya focuses his eyes on her to not lose her.
- When they reach Kenjirou's house, it takes a while for the door to open, revealing Konoha, who explains that he didn't know how to open it. Hiyori quickly becomes infatuated with him, and Hibiya, noticing this, questions Konoha's presence. When he hears Hiyori's name, Konoha says that Kenjirou told him to let her in. Hibiya, greatly disliking Konoha at this point, suggests that Konoha might be a trespasser, but Hiyori vehemently denies this and goes inside. Konoha introduces himself to Hibiya, and Hibiya glares at him as Hiyori tells Konoha to forget him and guides him inside with her.
Children Record 2[]
(チルドレンレコード2 Chirudoren Rekōdo 2)
- After eating a dinner made by Kido and just before 9 PM, the Mekakushi Dan, except Kano, rest in the hideout. Momo fell asleep and, according to Shintaro, cannot be woken up, so Kido carries Momo to her own room after she washes the dishes. Konoha also falls asleep on a couch, and Shintaro wonders what history he has with Hibiya and Ene. In his phone, Ene gets into a digital futon, apparently to sleep, which he finds odd as he recalls her saying that she doesn't require sleep. Kido returns and sits down at a couch, and Ene remarks about Konoha, calling him an "imposter" so she can differentiate him from someone else. Shintaro asks who that is, and Ene says that she will explain to him later.
- Shintaro asks Kido about Hibiya, his new eye ability, and about the Mekakushi Dan and their own eye abiltiies. Kido admits that they haven't fully explained everything because of how they got their abilities and how the abilities affected their lives afterwards. Shintaro wants to withdraw, seeing himself unrelated to the Mekakushi Dan without an eye ability himself, but an intrusive thought asks if he is running away again. Kido asks Shintaro what's wrong, and he reassures her before asking her for her story.
- Kido explains that she once lived with her father, stepmother, and sister before, one day, her father set their house on fire following bankruptcy from reckless spending. Kido and her sister were unable to escape the flames before a "huge mouth" swallowed them whole. Shintaro, engrossed, asks what happens next, but Kido tells him that she doesn't remember. She next recalls waking up in the house's ruins with most of her burns gone and now with Concealing Eyes. She says that Kano similarly remembers the mouth but doesn't remember what happened afterwards, while Seto fell unconscious while drowning and thus doesn't remember anything before waking up.
- At the mention of drowning, Shintaro recalls how Momo and her father went to the beach several years ago. Momo had drifted out too far into the ocean, and their father tried to save her before both were taken by a large wave. Their father was never found, but Momo miraculously showed up on the beach the next day. Kido points out a pattern that everyone who entered the Kagerou Daze was with someone else, as Kano was with his mother and Seto with his friend, and that all of their companions disappeared. She adds that while her parents' bodies were found in the fire, her sister's wasn't.
- Shintaro theorizes that whatever had swallowed the ability users had saved them from death before spitting them back out and that their companions might still be in it. Kido agrees, as she and the others have thought similarly, and says that they wish to get the people out, if possible. She also says that it would be useful it any of them could remember their experience after being swallowed and before getting their abilities. Shintaro remembers how Hibiya accused Konoha earlier and suggests that Hibiya remembers his time there. Kido gets up to wake Hibiya up, but Shintaro stops her and says that they should let him rest.
- Kido is embarrassed at her brashness, and Shintaro remarks that it must be hard to lead the Mekakushi Dan. Kido, again embarrassed, gives him blankets for himself and Konoha and leaves to her room; Shintaro ponders that he cannot understand her. Shintaro places a blanket on Konoha and searches for the light switch. Marry arrives from her room and, suspicious, asks Shintaro what he is doing; when they clear up the misunderstanding, she tells him where the light switch is (the bullseye of a dartboard). Shintaro turns off the lights, scaring her, and he turns them back on for Marry to go back to her room before turning them off again. Shintaro then lies down on the sofa and asks (not to himself) if him meeting the Mekakushi Dan means something before falling asleep.
- While dreaming, Shintaro speaks with an unnamed person. They ask if he has been having fun with his new friends before asking if Shintaro remembers them. Shintaro, unnerved, says that's a weird question, and they tell him to say their name if he remembers. Instead of answering, Shintaro begs them to stop.
- Shintaro jolts awake to Momo screaming in surprise at him. Momo turns on the lights, and Shintaro explains that he had a dream and asks why she is here. Momo says that she wanted to check on Hibiya and urges Shintaro to go back to sleep. Shintaro asks why "she" is putting up an act and explains that he knows Momo well and that she wouldn't wake up even if he screamed next to her. Furthermore, since she had an argument with Hibiya, she wouldn't actually want to check on him. Lastly, "Momo" addressed him incorrectly. Shintaro tells Kano to stop, and Kano disables his Deceiving Eyes, revealing himself. Shintaro, sensing that this is malicious, asks why Kano pretended to be his sister, and Kano instead turns away while suggesting that Shintaro may have forgotten something important. Shintaro, annoyed, stands up and turns Kano to face him. The light flickers, and Shintaro sees Ayano in front of him instead.
- Stunned, Shintaro breaks down, and "Ayano" asks if he had forgotten her before telling him it is okay and farewell. The lights flicker again, and, when they're back on, no one is there anymore. Shintaro collapses to his hands and knees, crying, and wonders if this is his punishment for never reaching out to Ayano when he had the chance. He starts to apologize, despite no one being there to hear him.
Kagerou Daze 03[]
(カゲロウデイズ03 Kagerō Deizu 03)
- On the morning of the second day of their trip, Hibiya and Hiyori go to a cemetery to visit her older sister, Ayaka, for the anniversary of her death. Hibiya has been in a bad mood since meeting Konoha yesterday. Furthermore, they also tried to go to the department store to buy Hibiya's cellphone, but it had been closed due to "unknown circumstances" (i.e. the terrorists). Konoha isn't accompanying them now because they could not wake him up and Kenjirou, who apparently lived in another location, told Konoha not to leave the house by himself. Kenjirou had also told Hiyori to come home around afternoon, so that he can give her Momo's autograph.
- They meet Kano in front of the Tateyama gravesite. Hiyori says that that is her sister's grave and asks who he is; Kano, who does not introduce himself, is surprised to see Hiyori and says he sees the resemblance. He excitedly says that her sister was a huge part of his life and sympathizes with Hibiya for being bossed around, since he also has a "scary boss" giving him orders today. Kano leaves after Hibiya confirms that they are supposed to go back soon, and the two pay their respect to Ayaka's grave. Hibiya reflects about how Ayaka apparently left her family to see the world, causing her parents to cut ties with her, and how Hiyori first met her at her funeral.
- Hiyori suggests that they go shopping instead of heading straight back and leads Hibiya through the city to a store. She comes out with two gifts, one for Konoha and the other for Hibiya. Hibiya is both joyous at the gift but also abhorred by its smell upon opening it; it's a salmon sockeye keychain that also smells odd. He realizes that Hiyori is messing with him, but he still is happy that she got him a gift.
- They begin to head back home, but then a black cat rubs Hiyori's ankles before running off. Hiyori, enamored, declares that wants the cat and chases after it, with Hibiya chasing her. They eventually reach the cat in a children's park. As Hiyori approaches it, Hibiya notices the cat's red eyes and feels primal danger. He yells out to Hiyori that the cat is weird, and the cat stares at him before leaving. Hiyori berates Hibiya and demands him to explain his behavior for the past two days. Hibiya shuts down and begins to confess, causing Hiyori to shout at him to stop. When they both go quiet, the cicadas begin crying.
- Hiyori calls Hibiya disgusting and tells him not to come home before walking away. Hibiya, looking at the ground, hears her encounter Konoha, who went to look for them. She asks Konoha if he heard their conversation. When Konoha affirms, Hibiya knows that Hiyori will run away and takes off after her. Hibiya sees Hiyori, just ahead of him, run into the street and the red light of a crossing sign. He screams at her to notice it and lunges at Hiyori; just before the truck hits them, he grabs her hand.
Moonshine Recital[]
(Otsukimi Recital) (オツキミリサイタル Otsukimi Risaitaru)
- Momo dreams of happily jumping through a meadow with a cow. She tries to jump high into the air but then falls. Hibiya appears and calls her a cow. When she denies it, he gives her a mirror, which shows Momo as a cow in her idol outfit.
- Momo wakes up screaming and finds herself besides Kido on a bed. She is embarrassed, as she knows she has a habit of bizarrely sleeptalking and had vowed to never sleep by someone. She blames Hibiya for the nightmare and thinks about him and his ability. She goes to the bathroom to shower and strips before Hibiya knocks on the door, demanding for his vest because something important is in it. Momo, now in a towel and feeling vindictive, pulls out Hiyori's giftbox from Hibiya's vest, and opens it. Momo then bursts out of the bathroom to ask Hibiya for the keychain.
- Hibiya demands to leave the hideout without waking the others and eventually agrees to allow Momo to accompany him. As they walk, he tells her (three times) of how he and Hiyori were hit by a truck and then he was trapped in a world where he watched her die repeatedly before being "spat out". Momo asks why he doesn't ask for the Mekakushi Dan's help with finding Hiyori, and Hibiya tells her that he has no time to waste telling his story. Momo offers to help, and Hibiya asks what she will do if Hiyori cannot be saved. Momo looks him in the eyes and replies that she will support him regardless. They are both embarrassed, but then Hibiya suddenly uses his ability and gets lightheaded.
- Hibiya sees Momo's school, her shoe locker, classroom, and then her failed biology test. Momo realizes that Hibiya's ability gives him remote vision, and Hibiya concludes that this can be used to find Hiyori and tries to look for her while making a power stance. A woman walks by, and the wind lifts her skirt; Hibiya sees, and his ability activates, causing him to see the woman's room and clothes. Momo scolds him and concludes that he can see places and things related to someone by looking at them, though that is bad, since Hiyori is missing. Suddenly, Kenjirou Tateyama drives up to them in his car. The teacher teases the two about being on a date and offers them a ride to their destination. Hibiya, not recognizing Kenjirou as Hiyori's brother-in-law, asks to go to the park where the accident occurred.
- In the car, Momo sees Hibiya using his ability as he stares at a magazine with a bikini-clad woman on its cover. She smacks Hibiya with the magazine, causing Kenjirou to tease her about being a jealous woman. They soon arrive at the park; Hibiya introduces himself to Kenjirou, who laughs and introduces himself as Tateyama before driving away. Hibiya thinks the name sounds familiar.
- They spend the whole day at the park trying to activate Hibiya's ability by looking for things that can remind him of Hiyori, with no results. Once it's dark, Momo suggests that they try again tomorrow, and Hibiya vehemently refuses and starts crying. Again, he says that he should go look for Hiyori by himself and refuses the Mekakushi Dan's help at Momo's suggestion. Hibiya then notices on the ground the wrapped gift that Hiyori got Konoha and collapses in despair. Momo encourages him to not give up and then remembers how Hibiya had used his ability in Kenjirou's car. Hibiya insists that he didn't see anything besides what was in front of him at the time. Momo points out that if the magazine belonged to Kenjirou, and then Hibiya's ability focused on the item's owner, then Hibiya's vision would not have changed, since Kenjirou was in the driver's seat in front of Hibiya. Thus, if he focuses on an object, he can locate the object's owner.
- Hibiya opens the bag to reveal a hair tie, and its cheapness compared to his own gift surprises him. He tries to use his ability on it, but it still does not work. Momo suddenly realizes that she has not been attracting attention in public for the whole day, meaning that she has been controlling her ability. She takes the hair tie from Hibiya and uses her ability on it to get as many possible perspectives, thus people who have seen Hiyori, to them. The streetlamps around them focus on her like a stage light, and Hibiya comments on how Momo really looks like an idol now. Momo looks at the moon, which seems to be watching her back.
Kagerou Daze IV[]
(カゲロウデイズIV Kagerō Deizu IV)
- Two unnamed people (implied to be Hibiya and Ayano Tateyama continuing their conversation from "Kagerou Daze III") talk to each other. Ayano says that "that child" has taken a liking to Hibiya, which annoys him. She reassures him that he will meet others who have eyes like him. He asks how, and she tells him to look for eyes that are red, the color of heroes. She tells him to not forget about "her", and he assures that he won't before asking which hero Ayano's red scarf refers to. She tells him to ask one of the others, and they part, saying they will see each other again.
Overture to Closure[]
(Kaien Panzermast) (カイエンパンザマスト Kaien Panzamasuto)
- Hibiya fainted at the park from focusing too hard on his ability, so Momo carries him, now awake, back to the hideout, Hibiya asks if the Mekakushi Dan will really believe and help him, and Momo affirms, since they're friends. She suggests giving Hibiya's ability a name, and he suggests Focusing Eyes, since he has to focus hard to use it.
- Inside, they see a chaotic scene: Shintaro is collapsed on a couch wearing what appears to be hiking gear, Konoha is shirtless and staring at them while Marry sews a huge hole in his shirt, and Kido is reading a handwritten book. Kido greets them and tells Momo that "Operation: Conquer Kagerou Daze" is underway. Momo narrates that, at this moment, she did not know that this would be the Mekakushi Dan's final mission and the last time she would be with any of its members.
Fake Afterword[]
(ニセがき)
- Ishiburo, a Vocaloid producer, celebrates the third novel. He talks about how Shintaro obtained the "Final Element Sword" and used it to kill "Kidorn", the head of the 427th section of the Mekakushi Dan syndicate, with it. He was surprised how the story then focused on the school, Kashiwa Academy, right afterwards, and praises Jin for his choice and the romcom synergy between "Enene", "Momomo", and Shintaro. He was excited when the novel shifted focus to the elusive but suspicious "Kahrno".
- Ishiburo then apologizes for not reading the novel just yet, as he had to write this close to the deadline. He imagines buying the actual volume in store and reading it thoroughly instead of skimming the volume he was given to write the afterword. He then congratulates Jin for writing the third volume and any readers who read his afterword.
Afterword: A Sight for Sore Eyes[]
(~あとがき『目に余る話』~)
- Jin greets the reader and says that this novel "propels the plot into the future" and introduces new characters and situations. While the release of this novel (in Japan) was nearly a whole year after the last volume, his schedule has somehow gotten even worse. He jokes that the reader must be tired of hearing him talk about his schedule, but, since he has hardly left even his room, accumulated piles of garbage as his only at-home companions, and keeps seeing the same delivery woman over and over again, he asks for some relief.
- Now that he's done writing, Jin is ready to go on a road trip, maybe to the countryside. Since he was born in a "one-stoplight town", he finds the city to be tiring sometimes. He wishes to God for a nice lady to spend time with while in the country.
- He suddenly recalls when his editor knocked on his door and told him his writing deadline for this novel; Jin screamed in response. He's very relieved now that he has finished writing volume 3 and says that his editor won't bother him for a while, surely. Suddenly, someone is knocking at his door, and he has a bad feeling about it, so he says goodbye to the reader.
