Kagerou Daze III -the children reason- (カゲロウデイズIII -the children reason-) is the third light novel volume.
The novel is narrated by Hibiya Amamiya, Shintaro Kisaragi, Momo Kisaragi, and either Konoha or Haruka Kokonose. It covers how, in the Novel Route, Hibiya, Hiyori and Konoha end up in the Kagerou Daze on August 15th of the present day, Konoha/Haruka's time there, and the Mekakushi Dan's actions after finding the survivors.
Summary[]
Konoha's World Situation[]
(Konoha no Sekai Jijou) (コノハの世界事情 Konoha no Sekai Jijō)
- The unidentified narrator (Konoha and/or Haruka in Konoha's form) watches Hiyori run across a street. Another unnamed being, whom the narrator recognizes, tells him that doing anything is futile, since the "Queen" has left and his existence in this world is no longer. He stands and stares at Hiyori before reaching out to her. Like many times before, he is unable to touch her, and she instead passes through him. He waits for the next moment and its accompanying scream, but, instead, his vision distorts, and he finds that his body has stopped existing.
- The being tells him that it is over, that "he" has been chosen, and that the narrator is only here not because of his own will. The narrator replies that it must have been the being's power that brought him here instead, since it also gives him his current strength. The being replies that the narrator simply has the body that he wanted and orders him to go back. The narrator asks the being to relay a message to "the me on the other side", to which the being says it can make no promises. Internally, the narrator thinks that, if he can have one more wish, he would reach out to the "girl who kicked [his] dumb ass all the time".
Kagerou Daze 01[]
(カゲロウデイズ01 Kagerō Deizu 01)
- Hibiya rides the bus from school to his home thinking about wanting a cellphone to speak with the objects of his affections: Hiyori, also the most popular girl in his small countryside town. At the end of the ride, he realizes that his bus pass is missing.
- At home, he works on a homemade Hiyori doll when he receives a phone call from Hiyori, who invites him to go to the city with her for the summer. Though he initially misunderstands her intentions to be romantic interest in him, he eventually realizes she just wants his help with carrying things while she gets an autograph from her new favorite idol, whom her brother-in-law teaches. Hiyori invited him because she had found his bus pass and in it a flyer for cell phones, which can only be purchased in the city. Hibiya processes the misunderstanding before accepting the invitation.
Children Record 1[]
(チルドレンレコード1 Chirudoren Rekōdo 1)
- At the present day on August 15th, Shintaro waits outside of Hibiya’s examination room in the hospital with Konoha and Ene. He had earlier given his phone to Konoha so that Ene could talk to him, but she had Konoha give her back to Shintaro, saying that she was mistaken. Konoha apologizes for not understanding what she was talking about.
- Hibiya wakes up and berates Konoha before running away. Shintaro, who chased the ambulance to the hospital by foot, is too tired to go after him, so Konoha picks him up and moves at supernatural speeds to go to Hibiya by the hospital’s entrance. Shintaro is now nauseous, and Konoha is too scared to approach Hibiya alone, so Shintaro calls Momo, whom he remembers is waiting nearby.
- Momo catches Hibiya, thus breaking her concealment from Kido’s Concealing Eyes. Hibiya insults Momo and calls her fat, causing her to let go of him before attacking, but Kido stops her. Shintaro questions Hibiya, who says that a girl close to him may have died and to have Konoha explain, since he watched without doing anything.
- Hibiya then faints, and Kido catches him, revealing herself. She decides that Hibiya and Konoha will go to the hideout, as Hibiya has now acquired an eye ability, and has Momo call the hideout in preparation. Momo reports that Kano is out for the day, but Seto has taken Marry to her room so she won’t get scared.
- While they walk to the hideout, Ene asks Shintaro if they can go home, but he denies her because he’s concerned and curious about Hibiya. He mistakes her sullenness for a low battery and says he will plug in his phone for her, surprising her, and she cheers up.
Kagerou Daze 02[]
(カゲロウデイズ02 Kagerō Deizu 02)
- Hibiya and Hiyori ride the train to the city. Hibiya is excited by the scenery, which annoys and embarrasses Hiyori. Hibiya recalls how, in the past few weeks leading up to the trip, Hiyori did not treat him any differently or kindlier. Their only conversations to plan the trip were from phone calls initiated by her. To convince them to let him go, Hibiya lied to his parents that the city had a special program on Indian culture that he is desperately interested in.
- When they get off the train, Hibiya is surprised by how crowded the station is and then gets stuck at the ticket gate, greatly embarrassing Hiyori. She walks away from him quickly, and Hibiya focuses his eyes on her to not lose her.
- When they reach Kenjirou's house, it takes a while for the door to open, revealing Konoha, who explains that he didn't know how to open it. Hiyori quickly becomes infatuated with him, and Hibiya, noticing this, questions Konoha's presence. When he hears Hiyori's name, Konoha says that Kenjirou told him to let her in. Hibiya, greatly disliking Konoha at this point, suggests that Konoha might be a trespasser, but Hiyori vehemently denies this and goes inside. Konoha introduces himself to Hibiya, and Hibiya glares at him as Hiyori tells Konoha to forget him and guides him inside with her.
Children Record 2[]
(チルドレンレコード2 Chirudoren Rekōdo 2)
- Back at the hideout, the Mekakushi Dan relaxes after dinner. Momo and Konoha falling asleep, and Ene makes herself her own bed in Shintaro’s phone. Shintaro and Kido discuss the Mekakushi Dan’s eye abilities and how they seemed to get them. Kido was in a house fire and remembers a “huge mouth” swallowing her and her sister, but she doesn’t remember anything afterwards until she woke up, unharmed, in her house’s ruin with Concealing Eyes and her sister missing. Kano and Seto had similar experiences where their companion disappeared and they don’t remember what happened before getting their ability, and Kano also remembers the mouth. Shintaro tells her how Momo and their father went missing in the sea one summer, and Momo miraculously appeared unharmed the next day.
- They theorize that whatever had swallowed them had kept them alive and is still holding their companions. Shintaro guesses that Hibiya remembers his experience in the Kagerou Daze, based on how he berated Konoha, and they resolve to question him the next day. Kido goes to bed, with Momo also sleeping in her room, and Shintaro goes to sleep on a couch after a brief encounter with Marry.
- Shintaro has a dream where he speaks with someone who asks him to tell them their name, to which he begs them to stop. When he wakes up, he finds Momo, whom he quickly discerns is actually Kano using his Deceiving Eyes. When Shintaro questions him, Kano instead changes the subject to Shintaro forgetting something important. As the lights flicker, Kano appears as Ayano and questions why Shintaro is forgetting her before saying farewell and disappearing. Shintaro breaks down and apologizes.
Kagerou Daze 03[]
(カゲロウデイズ03 Kagerō Deizu 03)
- On the second day of their trip, Hiyori takes Hibiya to go to the cemetery to visit her older sister for the anniversary of her death. Hibiya is in a bad mood because of yesterday’s meeting with Konoha and how, furthermore, they failed to get him a cell phone because the mall was closed because of the terrorists.
- At Ayaka’s grave, they meet Kano, who doesn’t introduce himself but tells Hiyori that Ayaka was a huge part of his life. Kano and Hibiya share a moment of sympathy as being errand boys, since Kano is following orders from a “scary boss” today. Kano leaves, and Hiyori leaves candy as gifts for her sister, whom she never met.
- Afterwards, Hiyori decides to go shopping and gets Hibiya and Konoha gifts. Hibiya’s gift is a salmon keychain that smells bad. As they head back, a black cat gets Hiyori’s attention, and she follows it to a children’s park. There, Hibiya notices the cat’s red eyes and warns Hiyori, causing it to leave. Hiyori berates Hibiya for his recent behavior. Hibiya begins to confess, and Hiyori shouts at him to stop before calling him disgusting and beginning to leave. She then runs into Konoha and asks if he heard their conversation. When Konoha affirms, Hiyori runs off, and Hibiya takes after her when he sees her enter the street and the pedestrian light turns red. He screams at her and lunges at Hiyori; just before the truck hits them, he grabs her hand.
Moonshine Recital[]
(Otsukimi Recital) (オツキミリサイタル Otsukimi Risaitaru)
- Momo wakes up before the rest of the Mekakushi Dan and makes up with Hibiya when he agrees to give her the salmon charm. Since he refuses to wait for everyone else to wake up before going to search for Hiyori, the two go out. As they walk, Hibiya explains three times how he and Hiyori got hit by a truck and put into a world where time looped and he watched her die countless times. Momo promises to help Hibiya no matter what, and Hibiya suddenly activates his ability. They discover that his ability gives him remote vision, though he has trouble starting it.
- Kenjirou suddenly pulls up to them in his car and offers a ride to wherever they are going. Hibiya, not recognizing Kenjirou as Hiyori's brother-in-law, asks to go to the park where the accident occurred. When Kenjirou drops them off, Hibiya introduces himself, and Kenjirou laughs and introduces himself as “Tateyama” before driving away.
- They spend the whole day at the park trying to activate Hibiya's ability, with no results, and Hibiya resolves to resume looking for her in person instead. He finds Hiyori’s gift box for Konoha and collapses in despair. Momo realizes that Hibiya’s remote vision focuses on the owner of an object, but he still cannot locate Hiyori with his ability and the gift for Konoha, a hair tie.
- Momo then realizes that she has been able to control her own ability for the whole day. She uses her ability on the hair tie to get as many perspectives, thus possible people who have seen Hiyori, to them. The streetlamps around them focus on her like a stage light, and Hibiya comments on how Momo really looks like an idol now. Momo looks at the moon, which seems to be watching her back.
Kagerou Daze IV[]
(カゲロウデイズIV Kagerō Deizu IV)
- Two unnamed people (implied to be Hibiya and Ayano continuing their conversation from "Kagerou Daze III") talk to each other. Ayano says that "that child" has taken a liking to Hibiya, which annoys him. She reassures him that he will meet others who have eyes like him. He asks how, and she tells him to look for eyes that are red, the color of heroes. She tells him to not forget about "her", and he assures that he won't before asking which hero Ayano's red scarf refers to. She tells him to ask one of the others, and they part, saying they will see each other again.
Overture to Closure[]
(Kaien Panzermast) (カイエンパンザマスト Kaien Panzamasuto)
- Hibiya fainted at the park from focusing too hard on his ability, so Momo carries him, now awake, back to the hideout, Hibiya asks if the Mekakushi Dan will really believe and help him, and Momo affirms, since they're friends. She suggests giving Hibiya's ability a name, and he suggests Focusing Eyes, since he has to focus hard to use it.
- Inside, they see a chaotic scene: Shintaro is collapsed on a couch wearing what appears to be hiking gear, Konoha is shirtless and staring at them while Marry sews a huge hole in his shirt, and Kido is reading a handwritten book. Kido greets them and tells Momo that "Operation: Conquer Kagerou Daze" is underway. Momo narrates that, at this moment, she did not know that this would be the Mekakushi Dan's final mission and the last time she would be with any of its members.
Fake Afterword[]
(ニセがき)
- Ishiburo, a Vocaloid producer, celebrates the third novel. He talks about how Shintaro obtained the "Final Element Sword" and used it to kill "Kidorn", the head of the 427th section of the Mekakushi Dan syndicate, with it. He was surprised how the story then focused on the school, Kashiwa Academy, right afterwards, and praises Jin for his choice and the romcom synergy between "Enene", "Momomo", and Shintaro. He was excited when the novel shifted focus to the elusive but suspicious "Kahrno".
- Ishiburo then apologizes for not reading the novel just yet, as he had to write this close to the deadline. He imagines buying the actual volume in store and reading it thoroughly instead of skimming the volume he was given to write the afterword. He then congratulates Jin for writing the third volume and any readers who read his afterword.
Afterword: A Sight for Sore Eyes[]
(~あとがき『目に余る話』~)
- Jin greets the reader and says that this novel "propels the plot into the future" and introduces new characters and situations. While the release of this novel (in Japan) was nearly a whole year after the last volume, his schedule has somehow gotten even worse. He jokes that the reader must be tired of hearing him talk about his schedule, but, since he has hardly left even his room, accumulated piles of garbage as his only at-home companions, and keeps seeing the same delivery woman over and over again, he asks for some relief.
- Now that he's done writing, Jin is ready to go on a roadtrip, maybe to the countryside. Since he was born in an "one-stoplight town", he finds the city to be tiring sometimes. He wishes to God for a nice lady to spend time with in the country.
- He suddenly recalls when his editor knocked on his door and told him his writing deadline for this novel; Jin screamed in response. He's very relieved now that he has finished writing volume 3 and says that his editor won't bother him for a while, surely. Suddenly, someone is knocking at his door, and he has a bad feeling about it, so he says goodbye to the reader.

Trivia[]
- In chapter "Konoha's World Situation", it is implied but unconfirmed that the narrator is speaking with Azami.
- Their conversation confirms that the being is the source of Awakening Eyes, while the lack of black pages hint that the being is not a snake (see trivia bullet below).
- In the original Japanese prints of the novel, in chapter "Children Record 2," the page where Shintaro speaks with someone in his dream is black with white text. This phenonemon happens occasionally throughout the novels.
- By comparing these black pages, it is theorized that they indicate that the narrator is speaking with a snake, and, with further context from Mekakucity Actors, that Shintaro is speaking with the Snake of Retaining Eyes in the chapter.
- In "Children Record 2", Shintaro is able to confirm that Kano is disguised as Momo because he addresses Shintaro incorrectly. How Momo addresses Shintaro varies by language.
- In Japanese, Momo calls Shintaro "お兄ちゃん" (Onii-chan i.e. "big brother" in a childish way), and Kano, disguised as Momo, instead calls him "兄ちゃん" (Nii-chan i.e. "big brother", also childish, but even more casual).
- In English, Momo calls Shintaro by his name, while Kano, disguised as Momo, instead calls him "big bro".
Errors[]
- In the English localization of "Kagerou Daze IV", Ayano refers to "that guy" taking a liking to Hibiya, which implies that the subject is male. In Japanese, she refers to the subject as "その子," which translates to "that child" and is considered more feminine.
- Ayano also refers to Azami this way in Kagerou Daze VI -over the dimension-.
