Snakes

Black snakes with deep red eyes grow from Azami's head as her hair, which is a typical feature of a Medusa, but 10 with abilities were her most significant. These snakes are created from Azami's strong feelings and are manifestations of her wishes.^[1] The snakes exist to fulfill the wish that created them and belongs to their owner^[2] and perform supernatural abilities to achieve this. In the real world, most of her snakes are not sentient with the exception of the Snake of Clearing Eyes, which is the snake that gave Azami the idea of creating the Kagerou Daze, and Konoha. In the Kagerou Daze itself, the snakes have been shown to be able to talk to their future owners.^[3]^[4]

A snake can act as a surrogate for a person's life. After Shion and Marry were murdered by humans and swallowed by the Kagerou Daze, Azami gave Marry the Snake of Combining Eyes, which is able to control all the other snakes, so she would be able to return alive to the real world. However, this causes Azami to lose control of the Kagerou Daze, and it continued her order to swallow up people who died on August 15. Since the Queen Snake now resides in the real world, the snakes began possessing the bodies of humans who entered the Kagerou Daze with a strong wish that they can fulfill in order to follow their Queen and create a new Medusa in the outside world.^[5]

A snake can stop existing if the wish that created them has been completely fulfilled for their owner and if their owner has no other strong wishes for them to feed on.^[6]^[7]

Azami's Snakes

The Snake of Clearing Eyes (目が冴える蛇 Me ga Saeru Hebi) He was created from Azami's desire to know who she is. ^[8] Because Azami stopped having the desire that created him, he gained sentience and devised a plan to destroy and rewind the world with the Kagerou Daze and Marry's Combining Eyes. ^[9]^[10] In his subsequent owners, he exists through their main wish and possesses their bodies to both act towards their wish and his plan. He avoids completely fulfilling their wish to prevent himself from losing sentience. He ends up possessing Konoha in every route, using Awakening Eyes to change his appearance and give him superhuman strength. This snake is owned by Kenjirou Tateyama (Music, Novel, Mekakucity Actors Routes), who wished to see his deceased wife again, Hibiya Amamiya (Manga Route 2), who wished to save Hiyori, and Hiyori Asahina (Mekakucity Actors), who wished to be alive and out of the Kagerou Daze.	16. The Snake of Concealing Eyes (目を隠す蛇 Me wo Kakusu Hebi) This snake was created from Azami's fear towards humans who persecuted her and for self-defense.^[11] This snake is owned by Tsubomi Kido, who once wished that she could disappear.	to be added
The Snake of Stealing Eyes (目を盗む蛇 Me wo Nusumu Hebi) This snake was created from Azami's fear towards humans who persecuted her and her desire to understand their thoughts. The Snake of Deceiving Eyes (目を欺く蛇 Me wo Azamuku Hebi) This snake was created from Azami's fear towards humans who persecuted her and for self-defense. The Snake of Drawing Eyes (目をうばう蛇 Me wo Ubau Hebi) This snake was created from Azami's fear towards humans who persecuted her and for self-defense. This snake is owned by Momo Kisaragi, who wished that people would pay attention to her instead of her prodigious brother.	to be added
The Snake of Opening Eyes (目を覚ます蛇 Me wo Samasu Hebi) This snake was created from Azami's fear towards humans who persecuted her and for self-defense. A distinguishing feature is that on its head it has a hexagon-like scale that covers a good portion of its head. From its head to the neck it has 2 more of these hexagon scales, and from the first hexagon to each its eyes, it has three, bar-like scales. It spoke to Takane in an abrasive way, which ends with her telling her to "open her eyes." This snake is owned by Takane Enomoto, who wished to no longer have the need to eat or sleep.	17. The Snake of Focusing Eyes (目を凝らす蛇 Me wo Korasu Hebi) This snake was created from Azami's fear towards humans who persecuted her and for self-defense. This snake is owned by Hibiya Amamiya, who wished to save Hiyori, (Music, Novel, Mekakucity Actors Routes) and Hiyori Asahina, who wished to save Hibiya (Manga Route 2).	to be added
The Snake of Awakening Eyes (目を醒ます蛇 Me wo Samasu Hebi) This snake was created out of Azami's desire to have a physical form. This snake is owned by Haruka Kokonose, who wished to have a healthy body.	to be added
The Snake of Favoring Eyes (目をかける Me wo Kakeru Hebi) This snake was created from Azami's desire to have her daughter, Shion, understand her love.^[12] This snake is owned by Ayano Tateyama, who wished to gain a snake and stay in the Daze to prevent them all from returning to the real world and creating a new, complete Medusa, which would result in the deaths of her family and friends.^[13] In the manga route, she wished to learn the story of the Medusa and Marry's origins.^[14]	to be added

The Snake of Retaining Eyes (目に焼き付ける蛇 Me ni Yakitsukeru Hebi) This snake was created from Ayano's life and Marry's desire to remember past routes and end the Tragedy ^[15]. Since this snake was once human, she is different from the other snakes, with the exception of Clearing Eyes, in that she still has sentience. She takes on both the appearance of Ayano Tateyama and as a black snake with red eyes. Notes

Although Locking Eyes has been shown to give Azami the ability to turn people into stone, it did not possess Shion or Marry, as they inherited this ability from Azami. Shion could turn people into stone (although requiring too much energy for her to handle) and Marry can temporarily paralyze anyone who looks into her eyes. This is not counted as one of her 10 Abilities.
The light novel has pages with black backgrounds and white text when there's a direct interaction with a snake (besides altered forms like Clearing Eyes' possessions or Konoha).^[18]^[19]^[20]^[21]
